Fix your slow running kitchen or bathroom faucet

kitchen faucet

Your kitchen or bathroom faucet may start to run slower than usual over time and this can be very annoying. In this post we will show you how to fix your slow running faucets, easily and very cheap.

The problem can be traced to a number of issues but first find out if only one faucet has this issue. This would eliminate a lot of spending and time to fix the plumbing of the entire dwelling.

If only one faucet has the problem, don’t worry, we have a couple of solutions that we hope will solve the problem.

Now lets get the pre-checks out of the way to narrow down the issue.

1. Check if the water supply valve is on

The water supply valve is located under the sink. The open the valve, turn it anti-clockwise. If the valve is already on, move on to the next step.

2. Check the faucet supply lines

These are the tubes underneath the sink that channels the water to the faucet. Inspect them carefully to ensure that they are not kinked or crushed. This would certainly reduce the flow of water from the faucet. If they are damaged or leaking, watch the video below on how to replace them.

To check for blockage inside the tubes:

  • Turn off the water supply valve by turning clockwise.
  • Remove the tube from the faucet.
  • Place that end of the tube in a bucket and turn on the water supply valve.
  • If there is a strong flow of water, the tube is clear and the problem is with the faucet.

3. The aerator may have been designed for low-flow

The aerator is threaded unto the end of the faucet spout and may be removed easily with an adjustable wrench. Some faucets are made with low-flow aerators to conserve on water usage. A small disc is located inside the aerator that must not be removed. If this is the case with your faucet, replace the aerator with another.

4. Clogged Aerator

kitchen faucet aerator - fix your slow running faucets

If the aerator needs to be removed for any reason, this can be done easily. All you need is an adjustable wrench. The video below demonstrates how to remove the aerator and clean the screen inside.

Clean thoroughly.

Aerators all include mixers, as seen in the image above. The pathways in the mixer may become clogged over time. To clean them, you may use a small sewing needle (remember to be careful) that would be able to get inside these spaces and remove any material blocking the flow. This should do the trick to clear any blockage inside the aerator after cleaning the screens.

I hope these options helped you to fix your slow running faucets. If not, check out the link below for how to replace the faucet entirely.
